Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max Review | Two Months Later…
Reviewing Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro Max (Deep Purple) two months later, to see if the camera performance, iOS 16 experience etc are worth that £1000-plus UK asking price. Or should you shun the iPhone 14 Pro Max and grab an Android rival like the Pixel 7 Pro or Samsung S22 Ultra?

One of Apple’s main upgrades here vs last year’s 13 Pro Max smartphone is the 48MP primary camera with updated OIS. Sadly this doesn’t make a huge difference to night photo quality, where the Pixel still shines brighter. However, for everyday pics and movies, the iPhone 14 Pro Max will satisfy most users.

Gaming performance is as strong as you’d like while the battery life is among the absolute best of any 2022 smartphone. I also quite like the Pro Max’s media chops, with a bright and poppy XDR screen and beefy stereo speaker setup on board. That said, the ‘Dynamic Island’ is a proper pain, getting in the way when you’re watching movies or playing a game.

Apple’s iOS 16 still needs some work, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max suffers quite a few other flaws for a flagship mobile. Better specs and camera tech can be found on Android phones that are considerably cheaper. Still, iPhone fans will be happy enough – just don’t waste your money if you already have last year’s smartphone.

  1. The issue with downloads is just a symptom of the much wider problem in iOS, its extremely limited (even now, almost 2023) multi-tasking capabilities. I always scratch my head when YouTubers, specially those who like Android, keep overseeing this completely. It is a massive deal and of course, one of the main reasons why the iPhone usually fares better in battery tests… Well, of course it does, because it misses a critical element, yet reviews always seem to skip that and just attribute it to Apple´s alleged superior optimization, when it´s not the case. In fact, whenever Apple has delved into things Android phones do quite well, like animated backgrounds, AOD, keyboard haptics or any shade of true multitasking, they´ve always come with noticeable impact on the battery life, which shows it is actually Android´s optimization that seems to be superior. Battery tests will not really be fair until iOS can do as much in the background as Android does.

  2. The iPhone is evolving indeed, just backwards tho when it comes to cameras. Horrible to very bad HDR, worse flaring, crushed blacks, overblown highlights and more…an iPhone 11 and older have better processing than whatever the fuck up happened in the 12, 13 and now 14 series. Worst flagship for one more year

  3. I have a 12 pro max, I’m keeping it until the pixel gets a proper powerful chip in it. I really want a pixel but I’m worried that it will slowdown after a year or 2. Maybe I don’t need to worry. But fingers crossed, next next tensor is proper powerful. That said, it basically an exynos which is why I jumped ship from Samsung. Though, these days I believe the SD and Exynos are fairly equally matched.
