Are CRT TVs Worth It for Retro Gaming? – Retro Bird
In prior videos, I’ve covered the benefits of CRT TVs, which consoles to use them on, how to track them down and where to put them… but the question I’ve found most people are always left with is “is it worth it?” In this video I will walk you through everything you should consider in determining if CRT TVs are for you.

my input lag standard is the spike pit in level 8 on blaster master (with wall 2) jumping that without hitting the top, falling in(fail!) or using hover. 20m2u user
I do want one of those TG16 avenger pads (or at least the pc engine version)
Goodness gracious, any 2D fighter or metroidvania game. I work from home and in the background is always pocket fighter or another fighting game playing on my 24" Dynaflat Samsung. Its just amazing. And it has component for the crisp looking ps2 games like Final Fantasy 12.
It's just necessary for non HD video games consoles
Crt also displays multiple resolutions that are divisible by 15k signals for TVs, 25k for arcade monitors and 31k for computer monitors. Something like that, it's not just 240p 60hz ect, different games do different resolutions, so you get one scaler working nicely for some games on modern display doesn't work in every case. 240p is very common NTSC standard though, pal was like 288p at 50hz but most our later tvs could do NTSC through rgb scart which is better for us after all.
I had a similar experience with a friend's TV at their cottage. I'd taken my Switch up to play some Fall Guys as I was up there through the week while working too & discovered that game mode didn't automatically turn on. Guess I'm used to CRT or high end OLED not, but it took some time to turn it on & I also had to fiddle with the adaptive brightness mode by turning that off too.
Personally I don't always use my CRT, but I'm always glad to have it when I do. To justify why, it's easy. Games made from that era just feel right on a CRT & it brings back the feeling of being a kid rushing to my room to play my new games on Christmas morning each time I play it.
Fell down the stairs holding my 32" WEGA and it used me as a sled to get down quicker. It hurt but I've never moved a CRT quicker.
"Okay honey, now, help me get this enormous CRT on me while I lay on the hard wooden floor. Yeah. Okay, now I need a banana, yup, that works. Okay, now record!"
It boils down to one thing and that is "The right tool for the right job". There is no HDMI option that is optimal to a quality CRT with composite 480p upscaling line doublers and S-Video or RGB. Developers used elements and short comings that exsist only on CRT to produce a video output that just can't be duplicated on an LED TV. Also to my eye, there is an effervescence or visual pop on CRT that looks simply flat on an LED TV. The only systems I use an LED TV for exclusively are PS3 and Xbox 360. My Dreamcast is also hooked up to a VGA CRT monitor. The OG Xbox MAME Emulator system I have looks good on an LED TV but there are some games on it that beg for a CRT.
Great video! I still use CRTs because of the look and feel. I've blown up a ps1 on a flatscreen before (never again) and the input lag is a HUGE reason. I play Smash Bros Melee and theres no reason to suffer such a technical game with any input lag so I started collecting a few CRTs and I just love them… I have a spare room filled with boxing (from moving day still) and about 10 or so CRTs and I love every single one of them. Plus, if one dies on me (this has happened recently 😔) I've got the spare I need ready to go!
