  1. And that brings an end to an engrossing first day's play. England will consider themselves in a solid position here, trailing by just 40 runs with seven wickets in hand, but South Africa will know there's still enough help in this pitch for their fast bowlers to come back fresh on Day 2 morning and try to chisel away a couple of early wickets. The match was on a knife's edge when Ngidi, Nortje and Rabada had taken a wicket apiece to leave England 43 for 3 not that long ago, but the resolute Crawley and the fluent Bairstow, with a bit of help from a flurry of extras, have inched England back into a position of strength.
Special mentions to James Anderson and Stuart Broad, the way they have always been bowling whenever they got the ball in their hand, just keeps on getting better and better Test-after-Test. Shared 6 wickets between them, 3 each for Jimmy and Broady…
Alrighty then. A 13-wicket day full of incident, and England are in an excellent though by no means impregnable position after losing the first Test. The perfect start for a neutral, you'd think.
