  1. I feel like this "issue" was severely blown out of proportion and baited black armys by adding a racial tone to the accusations, especially in the present climate. To be clear, I'm not saying that black people being uncomfortable with it is invalid – that's a completely natural reaction and if it means you don't want to listen to the song, that is completely fair as well. But saying that it shouldn't be used in music AT ALL coz it makes you uncomfortable IS unfair. Regardless of racial connotations, it WAS supposed to be uncomfortable – it was a cult leader shouting propaganda, brainwashing his followers, why tf would you expect it to be pleasant to listen to? Music, just like any other form of art, isn't supposed to be just sunshine and rainbows. If you try to understand the purpose of the sample and the impact it was supposed to make, there's absolutely no one whose speech he could've used without people feeling uncomfortable. Who else should he have used, Stalin? Hitler? Modi? Trump? He could hardly use the speech of a well loved leader whiletrying to make a point about propaganda, strong-arming and brainwashing people. Coming back to the point about art, unlike what you may think, art isn't solely about being pleasing to look at. Art is self-expression and sometimes what you express can be less than savory. Just look at Honsool – it's dark, it's painful, but it's an expression of his feelings at a point of time, and I respect him for being so honest in his music. Also, there is music, there is fiction, there's all forms of art about painful subjects that take a questionable form. There are songs written from the perspective of serial killers. Does that mean the writer is supporting the serial killer? No. It's just an artistic perspective. In comparison, "What Do You Think?" opened with a speech from a religious leader who was revered by his followers for his promise of a progressive society but who instead led them to a life of totalitarian rule at his whims and fancies, fanaticism, and eventually a forced mass suicide. The reference is used to segue into a song about the media sensationalism and mob mentality that characterize today's "cancel" culture andespecially Korean media and knetizens love for celebrity "scandals". It's about malicious rage that is intended to smear people's reputation rather than truly call for justice. It's so ironic that it fell victim to the very things it was criticizing. I absolutely HATE that he was pressured into editing the sample out.

I just want y'all to think a little before jumping to conclusions or demanding apologies and explanations.

I'll just say this: if you want him to edit out things he wants to express just coz it's something unpleasant to hear, then you're not vouching for empathy or consideration, you're vouching for censorship.

–original comment is not mine. I'm quoting another person who commented this.

  2. Well, I did not know about Jim Jones b4 this. But now I got to know about him and how much of a bad person he is.
I feel, it was wrong for Suga and his team to add his parts into a song. Tho maybe there intentions weren't wrong. Or maybe they were a bit ignorant. But its still wrong.
However, since apology has been made, I hope Suga and his team know why it was wrong and learn from this. They were wrong here.

  3. I can't even with you people. The kpop industry seriously needs to educate their people. You could say "oh it was an accident, they didn't know" all you want but if the same crap keeps happening over and over again it's not an accident anymore. I'm not talking specifically about this case but about when other artists are doing similar stuff. An example is when G-dragon from BigBang went and did blackface. Or when that one female idol was like on a radio talk show thing and they complemented her for "talking black" like what the hell is talking black? You could say "oh you know like they speak in the hood" if that's the case then it should stay in the hood because they're accent and manner of speaking and behaving is due to the environment that they grew up in which these idols didn't grow up in. You want to use samples and hip hop references? Learn some fucking history about the people you're mooching off of first.

  4. Jim Jones was a leader who promised everyone a fair and peaceful life, preaching scripture and socialism. He then took around 900 people away from America to "Jonestown" and proceeded to talk about how he's gonna make their lives better. He then continued to play prophet and had people believe and follow him. He had a team of people kill 909 members of Jonestown with guns and cyanide, a few escaping and he himself died from a single gunshot to the head. Stop defending Yoongi because he's your idol. Be open minded about what he did wrong and hold him accountable. U tell us to hold our faves accountable for their wrongdoings and don't do the same with yours. I understand its way past this but I hate it when people defend their favs after doing something wrong. He used a cult–A REAL CULT–for aesthetics and u proceed to justify it. Not only is this a cult but this cult was using Christianity to kill people. Im Christian and this is one of the examples of false prophets. Please stop defending Suga for something absolutely disgusting on so many levels.

  5. This whole controversy makes me feel bitter. When this happened last year, I lost major respect for him, and even now, I barely see people talking about it. I don’t care if he didn’t produce it, his name is on it. It’s his responsibility to make sure he doesn’t fuck up on his mixtape. He had the creative freedom in that mixtape to make sure everything was prevented. If Jungkook could apologize for going out during the midst of COVID (and jk went before lockdown, so what he did wasn’t even a big deal), why can’t Yoongi speak up too? Allowing the company to speak up for him, just makes him a coward. I don’t care. Sampling Jim Jones, a cult leader who manipulated, targeted, and killed many black people is just something that I can’t forget and I will continue holding the grudge against him. As much as I love Yoongi, his mistake is very ignorant, and careless.

  6. I understand the hard work Yoongi put in the mixtape and y'all's concern but why don't you sit back and think about the impact he makes on people all over the world? Bighit's apology says that Yoongi didn't know about the sample but elsewhere, it is clearly mentioned that he produced it. And if he didn't know about it, how would you justify him using it for the meaning of the song?

For every poc, the sample is very disrespectful and hurting. Jj was a murderer and even though the sample gives a deeper meaning to the song, we can't deny the fact that he caused on of the biggest mass murders in history and people may get hurt by the memory of him. Yoongi could have avoided that. Please try to understand the feelings before attacking them. There are a lot of black Armys who stanned them since 2013 but feel bad because of this song.

And anyways, if our favourite is making a mistake, isn't it our duty to make him realise so it'll get better in the future? No fighting, think about it
