Hello and welcome to our coverage of day 2 of the second Test 1st session of this edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Big news coming in from the Australian camp. Opener David Warner is ruled out due to concussion Matt Renshaw will replace him in the playing XI.

After a solid opening day of this Test where Australia finally scored some runs on the tour after winning the toss and electing to bat first the Indian spinners and Mohammed Shami fired in to send them packing at 263. Usman Khawaja (81) Peter Handscomb (72*) and skipper Pat Cummins (33) would be happy with their batting efforts on a pitch offering some help to the bowlers.

Australia made a couple of changes in the playing XI with Scott Boland and Matt Renshaw making way for Travis Head and another spinner in Matt Kuhnemann who just flew in as a replacement to Mitchell Swepson on the tour.

Renshaw’s removal from the XI lasted just a day after David Warner reported concussion and is now replaced in the playing XI after getting hit by a Mohammed Siraj bouncer on the opening day. Openers Warner (15) and Khawaja provided a good start adding 50 runs for the first wicket when Mohammed Shami broke the stand in the 16th over of the match.

Australia’s middle order crumbled as Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Marnus Labuschagne Steven Smith for a duck in quick interval with Shami striking again in his second spell to send the in-form Travis Head back after he scored 12 on his first knock on the trip.

Khawaja and Handscomb then joined forces and played the spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin well to add 59 runs for the 5th wicket but KL Rahul must get the credit of breaking the stand as he picked up the ball from the air as Khawaja went for a reverse sweep against Jadeja and failed to keep it down.

Alex Carey then was shown the path in the very next over owing to a good catch from Virat Kohli at slip but skipper Pat Cummins displayed some resolution in his knock adding another 59 runs for the 7th wicket with Jadeja getting his second in form of the Aussie skipper.

The middle order crumbled losing the next 3 wickets for 36 runs with Shami cleaning up the tail bowling out Nathan Lyon and Kuhnemann. Axar Patel and Siraj bowled well but finished without a wicket next to their name Shami took 4 with Ashwin and Jadeja sharing 3 wickets apiece.

We are now back with the coverage of the second day after the Indian openers skipper Rohit Sharma and Rahul have so far added 21 runs without losing a wicket. Australia have played just one fast bowler in Cummins and the pitch might be a bit helpful come the second day but India have an experienced and in-form batting order with local boy Virat Kohli looking to get another big score against the arch rivals.

There was a landmark moment in the game for Jadeja who became the quickest Indian player to complete the double of scoring more than 2500 runs and picking more than 250 wickets in Tests achieving the feat in 62 Tests. Only Sir Ian Botham is ahead of him in the list with 55 matches. The next three names to feature behind Jadeja are legendary with Imran Khan (64) Kapil Dev (65) and Sir Richard Hadlee (70).

Non-Asian team spinners opening the bowling in debut innings – Post 1921: Andy McBrine vs AFG in 2019 Kuhnemman vs IND in 2023 Before these two the last non-Asian team spinner to achieve this feat was John White (ENG) in 1921 v Australia. Shami’s impeccable record in Asia!! In Tests among pacers who have bagged 50+ wickets in Asia only Waqar (215 wickets at 38.2) has a better bowling strike rate than Mohammed Shami (82 wickets at 39.9).
