Hello and welcome to all the viewers for our live coverage from the third day of this second Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match between India and Australia coming live from Arun Jaitley Stadium Delhi. We are into the third day the traditional moving day as they call it. Australia slightly have their noses in front with an overall lead of 62 runs and 9-second innings wickets in hand. India need quick wickets in the morning session while the visitors need to apply themselves and continue to build their innings to set a solid target for the hosts.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first Australia posted a competitive first-innings total of 263 runs. Usman Khawaja scored a brilliant fifty up at the top. Peter Handscomb held the innings together with the lower-order batters and was unbeaten on 72 when the team was bundled out in the latter stages of day one. For India Mohammed Shami (4 wickets) Ravindra Jadeja (3 wickets) and Ravichandran Ashwin (3 wickets) were the successful bowlers in restricting the opposition.

It was Nathan Lyon who with a sensational fifer decimated India in their own backyard. He was clinical in dismissing the Indian top and middle order and at one stage kept India sinking at 66/4. Then Virat Kohli and Jadeja rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 59 runs for the 5th wicket. Just when things were looking great for India Kohli (44) was given out in what turned out to be a controversial decision handing Matthew Kuhnemann his maiden Test wicket.

Soon after Team India were reduced to 139/7 in a blink of an eye and were in danger of getting all out quickly but Axar Patel and Ashwin had other ideas as they played brilliantly adding 114 runs for the 8th wicket. In the process Axar completed his 3rd Test fifty. The Aussie skipper Pat Cummins opted for the second new ball and broke this partnership with the wicket of Ashwin (37). Honestly the new ball had nothing to do with the dismissal as Ashwin wasn’t able to time one.

Australia came to bat with good intent with Travis Head opening the batting in the absence of David Warner who was concussed and substituted by Matthew Renshaw. Despite the fall of Usman Khawaja early courtesy of a sharp reaction catch from Shreyas Iyer at backward short leg Head and Marnus Labuschagne batted positively taking the attack to the Indian bowlers. Australia will resume the day from 61/1 with Head batting at 39 and Labuschagne batting at 16. Can Australia pile on the runs and put India under pressure or will the hosts rattle the visitors with some sharp spin bowling?

Pitch Report Day 3 (Sanjay Manjrekar and Matthew Hayden): “Here we are on day three and as I look at the pitch my first reaction was that it has changed drastically from day 1 to day 2. From day 2 to day 3 I don’t think there is much change in the surface. But what do I (Manjrekar) know? Let me ask Hayden who is right next to me.

I (Hayden) would agree with you (Manjrekar). One thing is that it has been a touch cooler than the previous days. Hence it has an effect on these soils as we have black soil here in Delhi. We played our last Test in Nagpur which has red soil and we saw what happened there. Here we have some deterioration particularly here on a good length for a right-arm fast bowler coming around the wicket for a left-hander. There is some opening up in this area. I have never seen such a big crack in an Indian pitch before. This happens in black soil surfaces with extra clay; there is movement in the track. Why is Australia scoring so quickly? Because of this.”
