Great movie. Iconic. So many great scenes. My take on Paulie and Rocky's friendship… they were probably friends from school and got into a bunch of shit together growing up. Throughout the series, you can see that Paulie is loyal as fuck. He never turns his back on Rocky and always has his back. Maybe he wasn't always a dick. When they're at his house, you can see pictures of Paulie in like his military uniform and stuff, which going by the character's ages means he was most likely a Vietnam war vet. The horrific things he probably experienced there, alcohol, working a rough job, etc. The guy is clearly resentful that life hasn't turned out that great for him despite his best efforts, and as we meet him here, he's in a pretty bad place. Rocky loves the dude anyway.
