I am not sure if I have Autism, because I can't get a proper diagnosis.
I had an old class mate for 4 years, lets call him B.
B didn't speak and only made random sounds (I don't know if they were vocal stims or something else) He also made repetitive movements (Again, i dont know if this was stimming or something else) But with the person who always guided him he seems to function pretty normally. I don't know what he's doing now, but if he ever saw the movie I wonder what his opinion on it is…
As an autistic person, I personally do not find this offensive. Bad, yes, but not offensive. However, that is just me; I can be weird about what offends me. Like, ask me about my weight and I won't think twice, but tell me you don't like cats, and I will lose my sh*t. I do worry about those restraints scenes, though, and what they teach. Not to mention, Hudson's character not seeking ACTUAL professional aid in this situation she never should have been put in? Yeah, that needed to be addressed. Don't take some random neighbor's advice on any medical issue, especially if you don't know their credentials/experience.

Dang this is worse than I thought, thankfully I didn't watch the movie. But boy as an autistic and ADHDer, I hate the way Maddie acted… yikes. Especially the restraint scenes…
Im of the opinion that if an autistic actor is for some reason not a viable option in a movie where an autistic character needs to be played (although I can’t think of any serious reasons for that, because most common symptoms of autism can be worked around even in a studio setting) then ig someone with many autistic consultants, a great deal of study on the matter and a respectful portrayal of autism could play an autistic character. However, im not autistic, so im not sure how seriously my concerns should be taken.
The casting choice doesn't matter, as long as it isn't a harmful performance which unfortunately it was.
As long as they act well it's acting they don't need to be actually autistic.
